30.06.2010 - Reflection

The lone guy sitting on the church steps revealed a sad smile in anticipation of me taking his picture. I felt an apprehension at the intrusion and at the last minute angled the camera upwards.

29.06.2010 - Green Leaves

We are playing hide and seek. From my secret hideaway, I can barely see you walking way over there. Oh, the thrill of the seeker heading off in the wrong direction.

Song pairing: Hold Me Down – Minus the Bear

28.06.2010 - Turksvye

With white on red, a statement is made. I am only too relieved that the shop is closed. Prickly pears and stories of thorns tweezed out of milk white foot soles scare me. Thank goodness they don’t pretend to be everyday fruit, those rebellious renegades. Let them remain here, where they can still get their name in white on red.

Song pairing: Fantastic Pace – Portugal The Man

Sunday, June 27, 2010

27.06.2010 - Big Tree

Too many foreign fight films have lead me to believe that I can traverse from branch for branch with merely a firm flying jump to each.

Saturday, June 26, 2010

26.06.2010 - Chalk Ten

Your hand goes round and round in a circle as you press the chalk down firmly on the wooden table. Surprisingly it does not snap in two. You are concentrating. I am mesmerised.

Song pairing: Starting Over – John Lennon

Imagine drawing aside the dusty curtain that probably has not been moved in years (be careful of the spider) and just letting the light stream in.

Song pairing: Rush Minute – Massive Attack

22.06.2010 - Versigtig

Sunday, June 20, 2010

20.06.2010 - Black Cat

To my right people are walking by. Earlier, standing in the exact same place, they came past the other way. We are connected through invisible pulleys and strings for a rather boring, yet serendipitous, suburban puppet show.

Song pairing: Autumn – Joanne Newsom

12.06.2010 - Tracks

In the past we would place two cent pieces on the tracks. In the crisp morning air we would skip back in anticipation to search and find, with such relief, the most perfectly flattened treasures.

Song pairing: Hope In The Air – Laura Marling

05.06.2010 - Boots

Oh weary lady with the line mapped face, I still feel that you perhaps just may have sold your soul along with your handmade boots. When I slowly pull them on, one foot up and then the other, I often think of you. Thank you for letting me be the one to buy your soul boots.

Song pairing: Frankie’s Gun – The Felice Brothers

02.06.2010 - Tall Grass

When we ride through the reeds on horse-back, long stalks brush our sides. We wind through the thick grasses, not being able to see past the next hoof step, playing Cowboys and Indians all over again. You are always ahead of me.

Song pairing: Gone With the Sin - HIM

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

01.06.2010 - Hill Church

We all rush past this old church on a daily basis, passing from various directions over and over like time-warped scurrying ants. Today, for a split second, at this exact point, it looks all serene on top of the hill, as if the solemn king of a desolate road in a long forgotten dorp.

Song pairing: Fisherman’s Wife - Califone

Monday, May 31, 2010

31.05.2010 - Milk

Two roads behind me I can hear the fishermen calling. They have fresh fish today - Kingklip, Harder of dalk ‘n Snoek. People are stumbling out of their houses, slightly sleepy in the afternoon sun, but ready for a quick chat over the catch of the day.

Song pairing: Slow Day – Kristin Asbjørnsen

30.05.2010 - Prayer Flag

A heavy mirror broke today. I carefully pick the shards up and wrap each one, like a present, in sheets of newspaper. This takes forever, I am catching up on news. I read again about the climber on Everest whom no one could help in his last moments and recall seeing how painfully hard it was for people to walk away. Now, I read, a team of agile sherpas was sent to clean up the mountain, but respectfully left him there. Whenever I see a fraying prayer flag, I am always momentarily frozen in thought. He is at peace I am sure (please say this is so).

Song pairing: Between the Wars – Billy Bragg

Song pairing: Black Heart – Calexico

Friday, May 28, 2010

28.05.2010 - Luxurama

You even saw a movie here what feels like not so long ago. Today there are just rails of clothes and a funeral. To the left the foyer is filled with wreaths and silence, but outside a person to the left is shouting to someone on the right.

Song pairing: Island – Heather Nova

Thursday, May 27, 2010

27.05.2010 - Dusk Cat

I love how you are giving us a slight dirty look for coming home. This used to be your playground, now three of you have to share. Even though you all get annoyed, I am convinced that late at night you all sit up, share stories of crunching on delicate birds bones and occasionally dare one another to cross the road mere seconds before a racing car passes.

Song pairing: Me Llaman Calle – Manu Chau

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

26.05.2010 - Sheer Clothing

Friday, May 14, 2010

14.05.2010 - Reluctant Model

I would like to think that the reluctant model lies with a look of slight apprehension subdued by a brave streak, but she is rather bored with my coy antics. Perhaps she has just seen it all.

12.05.2010 - Bikini Beach

Cars are passing in front of me at a frustrating pace. They are too fast to cross in front of at a walk and too slow to sprint through. I remain standing and take this picture.
